A German second-division match between FC Magdeburg and Dynamo Dresden ended in massive clashes. This Magdeburg violence resulted in a record number of injuries among law enforcement personnel. According to official figures from the Interior Ministry of Saxony-Anhalt state, at least 64 police officers were injured, 17 of whom were hospitalized with severe injuries. DW reports this.
Timeline of the Magdeburg violence Incident
The clashes began near the end of the first half. Magdeburg fans attempted to break through to the opposing team’s sector on the stadium’s outer perimeter. Police intervened to prevent direct contact between the rival fan groups, which immediately sparked a wave of aggression directed at the officers.
Authorities characterized the level of fan violence as “unprecedented.” Police officers were targeted with pyrotechnics and signal flares, metal barriers and stones, paving slabs, and manhole covers.
Due to the massive use of pyrotechnics by both sides, the match was suspended several times. Cases of property damage and looting were also reported in the city itself.
Official and Union Response
Saxony-Anhalt Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang described the fans’ actions as “pure violence,” emphasizing that using heavy objects (manhole covers) against people goes far beyond typical sporting emotions.
The Police Union (GdP) issued a strong statement, stressing that participants in such actions “forfeit the right to call themselves fans.” A special operational task force has been formed to investigate the offenses and identify the attackers.
The match itself, which drew 28,000 spectators, ended with a 2-1 victory for Dynamo Dresden. However, given the severe injuries sustained by police officers, the sporting results have been relegated to secondary importance. Both teams face potential relegation to the third league, as well as strict disciplinary sanctions from the football association.
