On January 26, the Gold Price on global exchanges soared past the $5,000 mark, reaching a record high above $5,029 per ounce. Analysts at Reuters attribute this historic surge to a complex combination of overlapping global crises:
- The Greenland Precedent: Acute tension between the US and NATO regarding the status of Greenland has created an unprecedented level of uncertainty within the Alliance.
- Trade Ultimatum: Washington’s threat to impose 100% tariffs on Canadian imports (in response to Ottawa’s rapprochement with Beijing) has shaken faith in the stability of Western trade relations.
- Military Conflicts: Russia’s protracted war against Ukraine continues to exert significant pressure on the global economy.
These accumulating geopolitical risks are driving investors to seek shelter in “safe assets,” among which gold is the traditional choice.
Polish Triumph and ECB Reserves
Against this backdrop, Warsaw’s strategy is particularly noteworthy. Poland has systematically increased its gold holdings in recent years, achieving a remarkable result: today, Poland’s official gold reserve is larger than that of the European Central Bank (ECB) itself. While pan-European institutions maneuver primarily through currency instruments, Poland prioritized physical metal. This bet paid off handsomely—given current prices, this strategy transforms Polish reserves into a powerful economic shield.
Russia’s ‘Gold Shield’ Under Sanctions Pressure
The Central Bank of Russia has also significantly restructured its assets. According to Bloomberg estimates, the value of the Russian Federation’s gold reserves has increased by more than $216 billion since the start of the full-scale war in 2022.
This transformation is significant: prior to 2022, gold accounted for roughly 21% of the Bank of Russia’s reserves; by early 2026, this share had surged to 43%. Although Russia remains a leading gold producer, sanctions severely restrict the metal’s entry into international markets. Nonetheless, domestically, gold has become the primary instrument for ensuring financial stability.
Gold Price Forecasts: The $5,000 Milestone
Experts believe the rally is far from over. Until global leaders find compromises on territorial and trade disputes, demand for gold from central banks and private investors will only continue to fuel the price, driving it further away from the $5,000 milestone.
