January 7, 2026, will be marked in history as the day Washington escalated from threats to direct force against the “shadow fleet.” In a coordinated global operation, US military forces simultaneously intercepted two oil tankers – one flying the Russian flag – in different hemispheres: the North Atlantic and the Caribbean.
Both vessels are accused of violating embargoes and transporting sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran.
Drama in the North Atlantic (M/V Bella 1 / Marinera)
The most high-profile event was the seizure of the tanker M/V Bella 1, which had changed its name to Marinera and raised the Russian state flag just days before the incident.
The pursuit of the vessel began back in December 2025 in the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea and lasted for two weeks. The tanker attempted to evade capture by disabling its transponders (Automatic Identification System) and heading north. The confrontation occurred on January 7 in the cold waters between Iceland and the UK. The US Coast Guard Cutter USCGC Munro led the interception operation, backed heavily by the UK Navy and air support.
US authorities described the crew’s maneuvers—the emergency change of name and flag—as an “desperate attempt” to seek refuge from justice under Russian jurisdiction. Nevertheless, the US federal court order was executed: the American boarding team was deployed onto the vessel in international waters.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey was uncompromising in his assessment: “This ship with its notorious history is part of the Russian-Iranian sanctions evasion axis that fuels terrorism, conflict, and suffering from the Middle East to Ukraine.”
Russia’s Position
The Russian Ministry of Transport confirmed losing contact with the vessel after the Americans boarded. The Kremlin reacted harshly, calling the US actions “illegal” and demanding respect for the rights of the Russian crew. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) invoked maritime law, stating: “No state has the right to use force against vessels properly registered under the jurisdiction of other states.”
However, the situation did not escalate militarily. Although there were reports that a Russian submarine and a warship were heading toward the area of the incident, they did not intervene in the seizure process, instead monitoring the situation from a distance.
The Ghost in the Caribbean (Sophia)
Concurrent with the events in the Atlantic, US forces intercepted the tanker Sophia in the Caribbean Sea. The US Southern Command classified it as a “stateless vessel” belonging to the “shadow fleet.” The military claimed that the Sophia was engaged in the illegal transportation of oil (presumably Venezuelan oil). A Coast Guard convoy is currently escorting the ship to a US port for the seizure of its cargo.
US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the success of the dual operation on X: “In two coordinated operations carried out at dawn today, the Coast Guard consistently and carefully executed the inspection of two tankers from the ‘ghost fleet.’ The vessels Bella-1 and Sophia were either last anchored in Venezuela or were heading there.”
Enforcing Embargoes Against the Shadow Fleet: White House Position
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt clarified the administration’s stance during a briefing, confirming that the Russian crew of the tanker Marinera could face criminal charges in the US.
The administration’s main message: “The US will not tolerate violations.”
Leavitt articulated a clear political framework: President Donald Trump is not afraid to risk escalation at sea, despite the potential for increased tension with Moscow. She stated, “This means enforcing the embargoes against all shadow fleet vessels that illegally transport oil.”
Nevertheless, the White House is confident the incident will not lead to a global conflict, citing the strong personal relationship between Trump and Putin. The seizure of the Russian vessel is presented not as an attack on Russia, but as fulfilling Trump’s campaign promise to pursue a policy “that is best for the United States of America.”
