G7 in France: the summit, under the French presidency, will be held in Évian. On the agenda: Ukraine, the Middle East and Iran, global imbalances and the economy, technology and security, with the overarching aim of fostering convergence among countries in order to find common solutions, reduce global tensions and improve the economic situation.
The 52nd G7 summit opens in France: this is the annual meeting at which the heads of state and government of the world’s seven most industrialised nations gather to discuss economic and geopolitical issues and the major global challenges, in Évian-les-Bains, in the Haute-Savoie department.
Tight Security and Revised Summit Dates
The summit, which is under tight security and was originally scheduled for 14–16 June, has been postponed by one day, to 15–17 June 2026, as it would have coincided with US President Donald Trump’s birthday and the Ultimate Fighting Championship Freedom 250 event being held in the South Lawn of the White House.
Fifty years after the creation of the G6 in Rambouillet, which later became the G7, France assumed the G7 presidency in 2026.
Emmanuel Macron on Reducing Global Imbalances
“At a time when the global economy is threatened by profound imbalances – I wanted to make the reduction of global imbalances a priority of the French G7 presidency,” said French President Emmanuel Macron, noting that:
“Predatory competition, industrial overcapacity, underinvestment, excessive debt and deregulation, a decline in international solidarity, and weak private investment in developing countries: these imbalances threaten the prosperity and economic stability of nations, generate significant tensions and weaken the spirit of cooperation between peoples. They encourage the resort to protectionism to the detriment of all and are a source of financial, economic and geopolitical crises.”
Returning the G7 to its Original Purpose
“The G7,” he said, “was established fifty years ago to resolve economic crises. It must once again become a driving force for stability in the face of global change. This presidency will therefore have a simple objective: to return to the G7’s original purpose and make this forum a space for dialogue between the major economic powers, both within the G7 and beyond, in order to identify these imbalances and commit to correcting them together through coordinated national and international policies and international institutions supporting this work. It is our collective responsibility to act ambitiously to meet these challenges.”
Summit Participants and Partner Countries
At the Evian Summit, in addition to the traditional members (the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the European Commission and the President of the European Council), partner countries selected for their specific alignment will participate: South Korea, India, Kenya and Brazil. Representatives from international institutions will also be present.
Key Agenda: Ukraine, Middle East, and Iran
The topics on the agenda are as follows:
- Ukraine: a meeting with President Zelensky is scheduled to strengthen support for energy infrastructure and the war effort, as well as to create the right conditions for sustainable peace negotiations.
- The Middle East and Iran: the recent agreement (involving Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates) will be discussed. The objectives are as follows:
- To assess the implications of the agreement and support Lebanon.
- To ensure the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
- To reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme and ballistic missiles.
- Diversify energy supply routes to reduce dependence on the region.
Key Agenda: Economy, Technology, and Critical Issues
- Global imbalances and the economy: Focus on the North-South partnership, with the aim of mobilising private funds, restoring solidarity and addressing imbalances in international trade.
- Technology and security: A round table bringing together key players from the technology and social media sectors will address cybersecurity, system resilience and the protection of minors and democracies (including the issue of artificial intelligence).
Other Topics and Ultimate Objectives
Specific documents will be adopted on critical minerals, rare earths, health (cancer, Ebola), the fight against drug trafficking and immigration. The summit’s ultimate objective is to foster cooperation between countries in order to develop joint solutions, reduce global tensions and improve the economic situation.
