August 8, the day US President Donald Trump‘s ultimatum to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin was announced, marked a truly historic ceasefire agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. It was concluded at the White House with Trump’s direct involvement. But what about the ultimatum to Putin regarding the cessation of military actions against Ukraine? Nothing. However, the American leader announced an Alaska meeting with Putin, which is scheduled to take place on August 15.
So far, the only one punished is India. Trump announced 25% trade tariffs for India for purchasing oil and military equipment from Russia.
Key Information on the Alaska Meeting
If we disregard all hype-driven media reports taken from “sources”, what is currently known is:
☛ The Kremlin confirmed that Putin is ready to travel to Alaska for a meeting with Trump.
☛ Donald Trump stated: “Now President Zelenskyy should get everything he needs, because he’ll have to be ready to sign something, and I think he’s doing everything he can to achieve that.” According to him, the US is proposing the return and exchange of some territories and the signing of a peace treaty between Russia and Ukraine possibly in the coming months.
☛ Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that his country “is ready for real decisions that can bring peace. Any decisions against us, any decisions without Ukraine – they are simultaneously decisions against peace. They will yield nothing. These are dead decisions; they will never work. And we all need a real, living peace that people will respect. We are ready together with President Trump, together with all partners, to work for a real, and most importantly, lasting peace – a peace that will not fall apart due to Moscow’s desires.”
Regarding the exchange of territories mentioned by Trump, Zelenskyy noted: “The answer to the Ukrainian territorial question is already in the Constitution of Ukraine. No one will or can back down from this. Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier.”
☛ Zelenskyy’s participation in the Alaska summit remains questionable for now.
☛ UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reported that on August 9, 2025, national security advisors from European countries, Ukraine, and the US will meet in London. The meeting is being organized by US Vice President J.D. Vance and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
NEWSROOM IN notes:
☛ US Presidential Special Envoy Steve Whitkoff held talks with Putin in Moscow. After this, on August 7, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said: “Now we understand what conditions the Russians will require for the war to end. Perhaps these conditions will not be acceptable to Ukraine or, frankly, to other countries. But, at least we have something to start working with.”
He also noted that “the key elements of any end to the war will be territorial issues. There are territories that Russia has seized and currently controls, including Crimea. There must be concessions from the Russians and, of course, concessions from the Ukrainians. So it’s complicated.”
Regarding the promised sanctions, Rubio said that the president would make a decision within the next 24-36 hours: “Much of that will depend on how the negotiations progress — the work that we will be doing over the next several days. And ultimately, the president will make a decision as to whether he still deems it necessary to impose sanctions or not, depending on how the situation develops.”
☛ US and Ukrainian officials have not reported what specific concessions Putin insisted on. However, media outlets (Onet.pl, Bloomberg and others) from various countries, citing their sources, report the following picture:
- Ukraine must abandon its claims to Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. The US and Europe must recognize Crimea as Russian.
- Ukraine must completely surrender the territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions and withdraw its troops from there.
- Most sanctions against Russia must be lifted, and energy cooperation and the import of Russian gas and oil must be resumed.
- In response, Putin is ready to: freeze the war along the front line and cease the offensive in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. A peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine is not being discussed.
! NEWSROOM IN draws attention to the fact that due to the upcoming peace summit, media outlets in various countries are spreading a lot of unverified and manipulative information obtained from anonymous sources. It is not possible to confirm this information, therefore we recommend readers only consider official statements from the actors in the negotiation process.
