Finnish authorities have brought charges against the crew of the Eagle S tanker, linked to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, for damaging underwater communications. According to Yle, Finland’s Deputy Prosecutor General accused the ship’s captain, as well as his first and second mates, of sabotage and gross disruption of telecommunications systems following an incident on December 25, 2024, when an electrical cable between Finland and Estonia was damaged.

According to the prosecution, the tanker, transporting oil products from Russia, dragged its anchor along the bottom of the Gulf of Finland for approximately 90 kilometers, damaging five undersea cables. This posed a serious threat to energy supply and communications in the region, and repairs cost at least 60 million euros. The prosecution emphasizes the scale of the consequences for the infrastructure connecting Finland with Estonia.

The Eagle S crew denies guilt, and their lawyers insist that the case is not subject to Finnish court jurisdiction, as the damage occurred outside Finland’s territorial waters.
