Jimmy Lai, the prominent media mogul and vocal critic of the Chinese Communist Party, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. A Hong Kong court found him guilty of conspiring with foreign governments and publishing seditious materials. Alongside the 78-year-old founder of the Apple Daily media empire, eight other employees of his holding company also received prison sentences.

Jimmy Lai is often referred to as the “Rupert Murdoch of Hong Kong.” Like his famous global counterpart, Lai built a massive media empire that did more than just report the news—it shaped the region’s political agenda. For decades, his Next Digital holding and the Apple Daily newspaper were primary tools for influencing the public discourse of millions of citizens.

Apple Daily was a unique phenomenon in Hong Kong. By blending tabloid-style reporting with serious investigative journalism, the newspaper achieved massive reach and remained financially independent. It was the last major media outlet to openly criticize Beijing following the 1997 handover.

The newspaper was forced to close in June 2021 after authorities froze its bank accounts and targeted its management. Residents queued up overnight to buy the final print run of 1 million copies, which sold out in just a few hours.

According to the court’s ruling on February 9, 2026, the 78-year-old publisher was found guilty of violating the national security law. The investigation concluded that Lai used his media platforms to “collude with foreign forces” and lobby for sanctions against the People’s Republic of China.

In addition to the media mogul, six former top executives of Apple Daily were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 6 to 10 years. This decision effectively marks the final chapter for what was once the largest independent publishing house in the region.

Jimmy Lai has been in custody since late 2020. This latest sentence is the culmination of a series of legal proceedings. Lai previously served time for organizing pro-democracy protests in 2019 and received a five-year sentence in a fraud case that his defense team maintains was a politically motivated prosecution.

The current 20-year sentence is directly linked to his work as an influential publisher and public intellectual.

Human Rights Watch has described the verdict as “effectively a death sentence” given Lai’s advanced age and health condition. His defense team called the trial a “showcase” aimed at the complete destruction of free speech in Hong Kong.

Despite calls from many world leaders for his release, Hong Kong authorities insist the sentencing is lawful and necessary to protect national security interests.
