The European Commission is withdrawing its advertising presence from the social network X due to concerns about potential harm to the EU’s reputation.

According to Politico, an internal memo from the European Commission’s communications department, addressed to all service chiefs and directors general, states that the Commission’s deputy chief spokesperson, Dana Spinant, highlighted misinformation on X, particularly regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, as the reason for “temporarily suspending advertising on this platform until further notice to avoid the risk of reputational damage to the Commission.”

The memo also notes that the department is open to exploring alternative platforms such as LinkedIn, Instagram, or Facebook for advertising or considering digital advertising on websites, as deemed appropriate. There is an ongoing exploration of new platforms to enhance the Commission’s social media presence.
