The European People’s Party (EPP) has officially endorsed Ursula von der Leyen as its candidate for the position of European Commission President for the 2024-2029 term. At the party’s congress in Bucharest, 400 delegates voted in favor of von der Leyen’s nomination, with 89 voting against. She was the EPP’s sole candidate for the European Commission President role.
Key Challenges Outlined
In her speech, the current European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, highlighted Russia’s war against Ukraine, the conflict in the Gaza Strip, and the rise of China as the main challenges facing the European Union. She emphasized the need for a united Europe in the face of these threats, stating:
“Here at home, Putin’s friends are trying to rewrite our history and steal our future. Our peaceful and united Europe is being challenged as never before by populists, nationalists, and demagogues.”
Shift in Priorities for Ursula von der Leyen?
NEWSROOM IN notes that Ursula announced her decision to seek a second term as European Commission President in February this year. Politico has observed a shift in her rhetoric, suggesting that she is transitioning from a “green dove” to a “war hawk,” with a greater emphasis on military power and industry-friendly climate rules.
“Her goal now is to make Europe more ‘competitive’ – an all-encompassing word that in 2024 means more military might, more ‘Europe First’ procurement, and more industry-friendly climate rules,” Politico reported.
