The head of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe), Lieutenant General Holger Neumann, confirmed that Luftwaffe readiness is such that the military is ready to strike strategic Russian targets as early as tonight if Russia violates NATO borders. Speaking to the British newspaper The Telegraph, the commander added a sharp tone of readiness to ongoing discussions about European bureaucracy and the state of the Bundeswehr. While diplomats continue to seek compromises, the Luftwaffe chief outlined potential operations targeting St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad, and the Black Sea.

General Neumann expressed complete confidence, asserting that German pilots are prepared for immediate deployment. He stated that the Luftwaffe would not need weeks for bureaucratic approvals, environmental risk assessments, or administrative preparations:

Holger Neumann: “To fight tonight means: if someone calls me now and says we have this situation, we must be ready right now—and we are ready.”

Given years of European media reports detailing ammunition shortages in the German military and grounded helicopters, this sudden declaration of immediate combat readiness marks a sharp contrast with previous assessments of the Bundeswehr.

The general went beyond statements of readiness, identifying specific potential targets for German airstrikes. If Russia decides to test NATO borders, Neumann stated that the Luftwaffe is prepared to target several key strategic areas:

  • Kaliningrad, which remains the closest and most immediate concern for European military planning;
  • St. Petersburg, for maximum diplomatic and strategic impact;
  • The Kola Peninsula, home to major Russian military installations;
  • Black Sea Fleet facilities, despite the distance from German airbases.

“I think we have to make very serious efforts to observe from a security perspective and, if necessary, act in certain regions,” the commander added, suggesting that German reconnaissance is closely monitoring these areas.

To reassure NATO allies in Riga, Tallinn, and Vilnius, the Lieutenant General emphasized that there will be no tiers of security within the alliance. Germany promises to defend “every inch” of NATO territory with equal commitment, whether it is a suburb of Berlin or a Baltic border town. While this serves as a positive signal for the Baltic states, its execution depends on the actual operational readiness of German military equipment.

Future Outlook on Luftwaffe Readiness

Following these statements, Neumann included a diplomatic caveat, adding that he ultimately relies on the prudence of all parties and hopes a major war between Europe and Russia can be avoided. However, the general made it a priority to publicly register the Luftwaffe’s readiness to respond to potential threats at a moment’s notice.
