The ice has settled on the 21st World Ice Fishing Championship, held this year on Tamarack Lake in Lakeview, Michigan, and Lithuania has emerged victorious, claiming both the team and individual titles.
Team Lithuania dominated the competition, landing a staggering 37,432 grams of fish while incurring the fewest penalties, a mere 32. Their impressive performance secured them the No. 1 spot in the final team rankings, leaving Finland in second place with 33,942 grams and Norway in third with 31,616 grams. Team USA, despite home-ice advantage, finished in sixth place with 32,825 grams and 55 penalties.
Lithuania’s dominance extended to the individual competition as well, with Arturas Skvirba taking gold with a total weight of 10,441 grams, followed by his teammate Mindaugas Leonas, who secured silver with 7,079 grams. This marks Lithuania’s fourth world title in the last six championships, a testament to their skill and strategy. Furthermore, they boasted three of the top four individual finishers this year.
The highest-ranking American angler was Chad Schaub, who landed 8,077 grams, with his best catch weighing in at 5,102 grams, placing him 12th overall.
Fifty-six anglers representing ten countries battled it out on the ice of Tamarack Lake this weekend. This marked the first time Michigan has hosted the prestigious event, and the first time it has been held in the United States since 2013. The Lithuanian team’s performance cements their status as a powerhouse in the world of ice fishing.
