Stories of the American dream often center on discipline, family support, and determination. The latest example, which gained national attention in May 2026, is the story of the Valincius brothers. Born in Illinois to Lithuanian immigrants, Tomas Valincius and his brother Vytas have become standout stars in American college baseball, rewriting sports history in Mississippi. What makes their story remarkable is that their parents grew up in a culture where baseball was virtually unknown.

On May 18, 2026, 20-year-old Mississippi State Bulldogs left-handed pitcher Tomas Valincius won the prestigious 2026 Ferriss Trophy, which is awarded to the top college baseball player in Mississippi, The Clarion Ledger reports.

In his 2026 debut season for the Bulldogs, Tomas posted outstanding statistics: 14 starts, nine wins, and 112 strikeouts. Of those strikeouts, 86 came during Southeastern Conference (SEC) games, setting a season record. Major League Baseball (MLB) scouts are already following the young prospect closely.

The brothers were born in the United States but grew up in a traditional Lithuanian household in Lockport, Illinois. Their athletic talent comes from their parents. Their father, Jozef Wolyniec, was a competitive speed skater who moved to the U.S. and settled in Chicago in the late 1990s. There, he met Vaida Valincius, a competitive cyclist who had also emigrated from Lithuania. The family spoke mostly Lithuanian at home, and Jozef and Vaida learned the rules of baseball alongside their sons as they grew up.

Their parents instilled a competitive drive in them and invested heavily in their development, sending them to the prestigious Baylor School in Tennessee, which launched their athletic careers.

To support her sons on baseball fields across the country, Vaida has traveled a distance equivalent to two trips around the world. With their primary supporter willing to travel the globe, the brothers have consistently delivered strong performances.

With a three-year age gap between Vytas and Tomas, the brothers rarely played on the same team. The older brother, 23-year-old Vytas, played as an outfielder for South Carolina and Illinois, earning All-Big Ten honors at Illinois. However, the 2026 season brought them together when both brothers transferred to Mississippi State University.

For Vytas, this is his final season in college sports, while the younger Tomas has emerged as the team’s top pitcher.

Beyond the sports statistics, their journey highlights how an immigrant family successfully integrated into the United States and raised elite athletes by combining Lithuanian determination with American opportunities.
