Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by Sanae Takaichi, has secured a constitutional majority in parliamentary elections. This record-breaking result of 316 seats gives the country’s first female prime minister a clear mandate to strengthen national defense, even as relations with China face a severe crisis.

According to the final vote tally, the LDP won 316 of the 465 seats in the House of Representatives, nearly doubling its previous standing of 198 seats. This marks the first time in Japan’s post-war history that a single party has achieved such a commanding lead.

The victory was fueled by the personal popularity of the 64-year-old Takaichi. A cultural movement known as “Sanakatsu” (“Sanae Mania”) has taken hold, with young voters mimicking the prime minister’s style by purchasing pink pens and leather bags from her favorite brands. Takaichi’s straightforward image has allowed the LDP to regain public trust following a prolonged period of political instability.

NEWSROOM IN notes that Takaichi’s hardline stance on Taiwan has triggered the most significant diplomatic rift between Tokyo and Beijing in a decade. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s comments regarding potential military intervention in a Taiwan conflict drew a sharp rebuke from Chinese authorities. Beijing labeled the remarks a “gross violation of international law” and warned of a military response to any aggression, with top diplomats stating that Japan had “crossed a red line.”

Beyond rhetoric, Beijing has demanded the early return of the twin pandas, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, from Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo. For the first time in 50 years, Japan is now without any pandas. Thousands of emotional Japanese citizens gathered to bid the animals farewell, recognizing that the recall of these “symbols of friendship” signaled a freeze in relations.

While Beijing accuses Takaichi of reviving militarism, U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed “full support” for the prime minister, inviting her to visit the White House next month.

Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi confirmed that the government would accelerate plans to enhance defense capabilities. The new administration’s core priorities include:

  • Tax Reductions: Suspending the 8% tax on food products.
  • Security: Significantly increasing military spending and revising the pacifist articles of the constitution.
  • Alliances: Strengthening ties with the United States and Taiwan in response to regional threats.
