After the defeat in the parliamentary elections, the leader of the ruling conservative party TS-LKD in Lithuania, Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielus Landsbergis decided to resign. The politician said that he was taking a break from his political career so as not to become a burden for the party.
“I can’t ignore the fact that the party is becoming hostage to the negative discourse related to me or my family. I think that the party should freely look for an opportunity to transform itself, to find its own way in the future,” Landsbergis emphasized.
According to the politician, it was his figure that became one of the main reasons for the party’s loss. The negative image that was formed around his person had a significant impact on the election results.
Landsbergis ruled out the possibility of returning to the diplomatic service. He expressed the hope that the party will be able to be led by someone else, for example, the current Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte. However, the final decision will be taken in intra-party elections.
