The viral appearance of a jar of Nutella Artemis 2 mission footage captured during the Orion spacecraft’s journey has become one of the year’s most discussed marketing moments. As the mission set a new record for the furthest human travel from Earth, the Italian hazelnut spread produced by Ferrero floated into view during a live broadcast from the spacecraft.
Nutella Artemis 2: An Accidental Multimillion-Dollar Shot
Millions of people worldwide watched the historic broadcast from lunar orbit. The sight of the recognizable chocolate-hazelnut spread in zero gravity immediately went viral on social media. Viewers and media outlets labeled the episode a “cosmic-scale product placement,” speculating on the astronomical sum the brand might have paid for such integration.
Brand Reaction and NASA’s Official Response
Ferrero quickly capitalized on the opportunity for situational marketing. On Nutella’s official social media accounts, the company posted a clip of the broadcast with the caption: “Honored to go further than any spread in history.”
However, the space agency quickly debunked the marketing legend. NASA clarified that the appearance of the jar was not paid advertising or a sponsorship agreement. The agency does not collaborate with commercial food brands for crew provisions. The spread was aboard Orion and caught on camera by chance, as astronauts brought it as part of their standard food supplies.
