German prosecutors have announced the arrest of a Ukrainian citizen in Italy, officially identifying him for the first time as a key suspect in one of Europe’s most high-profile acts of sabotage: the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.
Arrest Details and Charges
The arrest took place in Rimini, a resort province on Italy’s Adriatic coast. Italian Carabinieri conducted the operation based on a European arrest warrant issued by an investigating judge of Germany’s Federal Court of Justice on August 18, 2025.
Germany’s Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office in Karlsruhe identified the detained individual as Sergey K. He faces serious charges, including jointly committing an explosion (Section 308 of the German Criminal Code), unconstitutional sabotage (Section 88), and intentional destruction of buildings (Section 305).
Investigators believe Sergey K. was not merely an operative but one of the operation’s coordinators. He was part of a group that planted explosives on the Baltic Sea pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm in September 2022.
Method of Sabotage
German investigators have confirmed a theory previously reported in the media: the group used a sailing yacht, rented from a German company with forged documents, to carry out the sabotage. According to the prosecutor’s office, this vessel transported the explosives to the site of the future blast.
Next Steps
The suspect is currently being held in Italy. German authorities have already initiated extradition proceedings. He is expected to be transferred to Germany shortly to appear before an investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe, where he will be formally charged.
Years-Long Investigation
NEWSROOM IN notes that the pipeline explosions, which occurred on September 26, 2022, triggered an international scandal and became the subject of investigations by intelligence services in several countries, including Sweden, Denmark, and Germany. Despite numerous theories and speculations, official authorities had not named specific suspects or countries behind the sabotage until today.
Previously, anonymous media sources had suggested the possible involvement of Ukrainian citizens and the yacht “Andromeda” in the operation. This latest arrest is the first official step to confirm these suspicions, giving the investigation a new, concrete direction.
Nord Stream Sabotage Investigation Continues
The investigation must now determine whether Sergey K.’s group acted independently or at the behest of state or private entities. The answer to this question remains the central mystery surrounding the Nord Stream attacks.
