Finnish Air Force flight cadets “drew” phallic shapes in the sky during a recent training exercise. The patterns were flagged by the flight tracking service Flightradar24 and the Finnish tabloid Iltalehti, which recorded the shapes on a virtual sky map. Radar screenshots quickly spread across social media, prompting an official response from military commanders.
Finnish Air Force training maneuvers or aerial misconduct
The Finnish news outlet Yle sought clarification from the Air Force leadership. It was revealed that the maneuvers were performed by students at a local pilot reserve school.
The incident took place during scheduled flights using Grob G 115E light training aircraft. According to the official military version, the future pilots were practicing techniques for steep turns and aerial reversals.
Command position: safety was not compromised
Finnish Air Force representatives explained the nature of the flight assignments. The department stated that aircraft trajectories inevitably form geometric patterns. While some are created intentionally to practice aerobatics, others occur by chance.
Military officials emphasized that the cadets strictly followed their prescribed exercises and did not deviate from their assigned routes. They noted that the maneuvers created no danger to other air traffic.
Etiquette and potential sanctions
Although safety protocols were not violated from a technical standpoint, the aesthetic nature of the patterns has drawn the attention of the command.
The Air Force press service stated that all members of the Finnish military are required to strictly follow rules of conduct and etiquette. The department concluded that if a violation of ethical standards is proven, “appropriate measures” will be taken against those responsible.
