The anime film “Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle” has set a new global box office record, grossing over $555 million. This achievement makes it the highest-grossing Japanese film in history.

The previous record holder was another installment in the same franchise, “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” (2020), which earned $507 million. This means two films from the same franchise have consecutively claimed the top spots among the highest-grossing Japanese movies. Both films are based on Koyoharu Gotouge’s popular manga series.

Before the “Demon Slayer” films, the global record for Japanese cinema was held by Studio Ghibli’s celebrated masterpiece, “Spirited Away,” directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Released in 2001, the film maintained its title for nearly two decades, collecting approximately $395 million at the worldwide box office.

In the new installment, protagonist Tanjiro Kamado and his allies from the Demon Slayer Corps will confront their ultimate enemy: the progenitor of all demons, Muzan Kibutsuji. This battle marks the culmination of their long struggle, which began after Tanjiro lost his family and his sister, Nezuko, was transformed into a demon.
