Ten Nations Launch New European Air Defense Coalition

Ten nations established a new era for European air defense by launching the Integrated Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition in Paris on July 13, 2026. The alliance aims to reduce the continent’s reliance on US military capabilities and protect European airspace from missile threats. The agreement forms the foundation for a new European security architecture.

The defense coalition includes Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.

The Core: European Air Defense and the Freyja System

Unlike previous decades when European air defense relied on US Patriot systems, the technological core of the new alliance will be the Freyja system. This hybrid anti-ballistic missile system was developed by the Ukrainian defense company Fire Point (co-owner and chief designer Denys Shtylerman) in close cooperation with the European defense industry.

The core of the system is the FP-7.x interceptor missile, which successfully completed flight tests in July 2026. The missile’s technical specifications are designed to intercept modern ballistic targets:

This high speed allows the missile to intercept complex targets, including Russian Iskander-M ballistic missiles, which reach speeds of approximately 2,100 m/s in their terminal phase. A major advantage of the Ukrainian system is cost efficiency. The FP-7.x missile is five times cheaper than the US Patriot PAC-3 interceptors, which cost around $3.8 million per unit. This low cost enables mass production without exhausting national defense budgets.

Production and assembly of the Freyja system are distributed among the coalition members:

  • Radars: German defense company Hensoldt supplies TRML-4D active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar stations, capable of tracking up to 1,500 targets simultaneously.
  • Guidance: German company Diehl Defence, the developer of the IRIS-T system, integrates its infrared homing heads into the missile.
  • Fuel: The Danish government fast-tracked the suspension of more than 20 domestic environmental and bureaucratic regulations to accelerate the construction of a Fire Point solid rocket fuel plant in Denmark.
European Air Defense Integration with Patriot and SAMP/T

In the first phase, coalition members are forming technical working groups to establish a comprehensive roadmap. The first live-fire intercept tests of a ballistic target using the Freyja system are scheduled for late 2027.

Rather than replacing existing air defenses, the new architecture will integrate with them, creating a three-tiered digital network:

  1. Upper tier: US-made Patriot PAC-3 and Israeli-made Arrow 3 systems remain the shield against strategic high-altitude ballistic missiles.
  2. Medium tier: Freyja and the Franco-Italian SAMP/T systems will handle the bulk of cruise and short-range ballistic missiles.
  3. Lower tier: IRIS-T and NASAMS systems will target tactical aviation and strike drones.

Integration will be executed at the software level through NATO‘s Link 16 tactical data network. This will enable real-time data sharing. For example, if a Patriot radar in Poland detects a target, a Freyja missile can launch before the threat enters the range of its own radar.

Global Equivalents and Geopolitical Context

The conceptual model for this network is Israel’s multi-layered missile defense system (Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow), which has proven effective against mass attacks. While the alliance partially overlaps with Germany’s European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), ESSI focuses on the joint procurement of existing foreign weapons. In contrast, the new 10-country coalition aims to establish a self-sufficient European technological cycle.

The primary driver for the alliance was the strain in relations with Washington following Donald Trump’s statements about a potential US withdrawal from NATO. Seeking to secure themselves in the event of a potential direct conflict with Russia, European capitals have begun building an autonomous defense data infrastructure, independent of Pentagon authorizations and source codes.

A Symbolic Milestone: Macron’s Address and Bastille Day

In keeping with tradition ahead of the celebrations, President Emmanuel Macron delivered his annual address to the armed forces. In his tenth and final presidential speech, he stated that Europe is undergoing a “strategic awakening” and is taking responsibility for its own defense.

Macron emphasized that while peace remains the primary goal, Europe is prepared to defend freedom and the rule of law “even at the cost of blood.” To support this defense strategy, France will allocate an additional €36 billion between 2026 and 2030. These funds will be used to replenish arsenals, improve operational readiness, and develop nuclear deterrence capabilities.

Macron also addressed the cancellation of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) project, which was developed jointly with Germany and Spain. The President stated that he “deeply regrets” this setback but urged the continuation of major European defense initiatives.
