Construction has begun on Earth’s Black Box, a steel monolith in Tasmania designed to record the climate crisis and preserve information for future generations.

The box is a steel monolith about the size of a city bus, with walls measuring 7.5 centimeters thick. It will be located at an abandoned airport. All construction work is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. The developers describe the project as a virtually indestructible information recorder.

Inside the structure, storage drives will autonomously save hundreds of datasets. The device will continuously record temperature changes, sea level fluctuations, scientific climate reports, and political statements. The concept functions similarly to a flight data recorder, where the Earth is the aircraft and humanity is the pilot.

The project was developed by the environmental organization Rouser Lab, the advertising agency Clemenger, and the creative collective Glue Society. The creators intend for the monolith to serve as a time capsule and a physical reminder of current climate threats.

Scientific Community Reception

Some scientists have expressed skepticism about the initiative, CNN reports. Yale University professor Anthony Leiserowitz noted that using catastrophe to scare people does not always motivate public action. In his view, the climate crisis is a long-term issue that requires more than alarming symbols. In response to such criticism, the creators of the project emphasize that the worst-case scenarios can still be avoided, stating that humanity’s “plane is still in the air.”

Located in the world’s oldest salt mine in Hallstatt, the project originally stored text and visual information on highly durable ceramic plates.
