Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated that Moscow would consider any foreign military contingents in Ukraine “legitimate targets for strike” if they deploy there before the cessation of hostilities. Putin made this statement on September 5 at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok.

According to Putin, a foreign military presence in Ukraine would become unnecessary once long-term peace is achieved. He promised that Moscow would fully adhere to any peace agreements reached and respect security guarantees developed for both Russia and Ukraine.

Putin also renewed his offer for a possible meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Moscow. However, Zelensky has repeatedly stated that he considers such a meeting unacceptable.

NEWSROOM IN notes that Putin’s statement came a day after the “coalition of the willing” summit in Paris. At this summit, 26 states expressed their readiness to participate in a peacekeeping mission after the war concludes. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who was also present, commented: “Why should we care what Russia thinks about Ukraine? Ukraine is an independent state. It decides for itself how to ensure its security. Finland did not ask Russia’s permission to join NATO. We are also sovereign countries, and if Ukraine deems it necessary to invite security forces to support peace, that is its right.”
