A consortium led by US financial giant BlackRock has acquired two major ports in the Panama Canal for nearly $23 billion. The deal involves a 90% stake in the Panama Ports Company, which holds the contract to operate these strategically significant ports until 2047.

The sale comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly after former US President Donald Trump voiced concerns about Chinese influence over the vital shipping route and expressed a desire for the US to regain control. However, CK Hutchison Holdings, the current operator of the ports, stated that the transaction is strictly commercial and unrelated to political developments.

Frank Sixt, co-managing director of CK Hutchison, stated, “I would like to stress that the transaction is purely commercial in nature and wholly unrelated to recent political news reports concerning the Panama Ports.” The acquisition is part of a broader agreement involving Hutchison Ports’ global operations. Once completed, the consortium will oversee a network of 43 ports across 23 countries, significantly expanding its footprint in the global shipping industry.
