Alexei Navalny: UK Investigation Confirms Poisoning Death

Alexei Navalny, Russian opposition leader and poisoning investigation subject.

Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a rare tropical toxin, according to forensic results from an international investigation recently unveiled by the United Kingdom. Two years after the death of Russia’s leading opposition figure, the UK, in coordination with Sweden, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, has released these findings.

Biological samples smuggled abroad by the politician’s family underwent forensic analysis at several independent laboratories. The results “unequivocally confirmed the presence of epibatidine”—a substance extracted from the skin of the Ecuadorean phantasmal poison frog (Epipedobates tricolor).

The politician’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, stated in her announcement:

I was certain my husband had been poisoned from the very first day, and now there is proof: Putin killed Alexei with a chemical weapon. I am grateful to the European nations for the painstaking work they have conducted over the past two years to uncover the truth. Vladimir Putin is a murderer. He must be held accountable for all his crimes.

In a communique released by the Foreign Office, the circumstances of Navalny’s death in a Siberian penal colony were described as “cruel and barbaric“:

Consistent joint efforts have confirmed that epibatidine, a lethal toxin found in the skin of Ecuadorean poison frogs, was present in samples from Alexei Navalny’s body and was highly likely the cause of his death. Only the Russian state possessed the means, motive, and opportunity to deploy this deadly toxin during his imprisonment.

British diplomats emphasized that epibatidine is not found naturally in Russia, and frogs do not produce the toxin in captivity. There is no benign explanation for its presence in Navalny’s system, the Foreign Office concluded.

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, after meeting with Yulia Navalnaya in Munich, stated: Today, alongside his widow, the UK is shining a light on the Kremlin’s barbaric conspiracy to silence him. Russia viewed Navalny as a threat and has shown the contemptible tools at its disposal.

Epibatidine is a powerful neurotoxin whose structure was fully mapped in 1992. Despite its unique analgesic properties—it is hundreds of times stronger than morphine and non-addictive—scientists were never able to develop a safe medication from it, as the therapeutic dose is too close to the lethal limit.

Symptoms of epibatidine exposure: a sharp spike in blood pressure, seizures, respiratory paralysis, coma, and inevitable death.

Dr. Alexander Polupan, an intensive care specialist who treated Navalny after his Novichok poisoning in 2020, told The Insider that the reported symptoms of Navalny’s final moments perfectly match the clinical picture of epibatidine poisoning.

London has already notified the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) of the findings. The statement emphasizes that the use of such a poison is a direct violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

“This disturbing pattern of behavior follows the use of Novichok against the Skripals in 2018 and the use of chemical weapons on the battlefield in Ukraine. It is clear that Russia did not destroy its entire chemical weapons stockpile in 2017, as it previously claimed,” the UK statement says.

NEWSROOM IN notes that on February 16, 2024, the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service for the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug announced the death of Alexei Navalny.

Russian authorities refused to release the politician’s body to his relatives for nine days, effectively taunting the family in public.

On March 1, Alexei Navalny was buried in Moscow.

The official version provided by Russian authorities was “sudden arrhythmia” complicated by underlying conditions. However, the new data presented in 2026 completely refutes these claims.
