McDonald’s is aiming high, with plans to open over 8,800 new locations, which means 50,000 locations globally and attract 100 million more members to its loyalty program by 2027. These targets are part of the fast-food giant’s strategic vision to further expand its sales within its already extensive restaurant network.

Fastest period of growth
According to a statement released by the restaurant chain on December 6, McDonald’s believes the expansion will be the “fastest period of growth” in its 60-year history. Over the past year, inflation has caused prices at fast food restaurants to soar and limited-service restaurants to rise 6.2%. However, McDonald’s has not been affected: The firm recorded $6.69 billion in revenue for the third quarter, with an 8.1% increase in same-store sales.
Projected Growth and Capital Spending
For the year 2024, the fast-food franchise forecasts a 4% net increase in restaurant growth, with nearly 2% of systemwide sales growth coming from expanding its footprint. Post-2024, the company aims for an annual restaurant count growth of 4% to 5%, contributing around 2.5% to systemwide sales growth.
This ambitious development plan necessitates increased capital spending, with 2024 expecting $2.5 billion in capital expenditures. Beyond 2024, McDonald’s plans sequential increases of $300 million to $500 million in capital expenditures annually.
Global Expansion Goals
McDonald’s eyes a global footprint of 50,000 locations by 2027, up from its current 41,198 restaurants worldwide. To achieve this, the company plans to open 900 U.S. locations, 1,900 in international markets, and approximately 7,000 in developmental licensed markets.
Focus on China and Strategic Initiatives
China, a significant part of restaurant’s international operations, is expected to account for more than half of the new locations in the international developmental licensed markets. McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski envisions China becoming the largest market for the company globally, with a potential range of 20,000 to 25,000 stores.
In addition to expanding flagship restaurants, the fast-food giant is testing 10 locations of a spinoff brand, CosMc’s, by the end of 2024. This move aligns with the company’s commitment to accelerating new restaurant development.
Loyalty Program Expansion
McDonald’s also aims to have a quarter of a billion active members in its loyalty program by 2027. Emphasizing the loyalty program’s significance, the business addresses the shift towards a “cookieless future,” focusing on data collected through its mobile app.
Strategic Partnership and Technological Integration
NEWSROOM IN notes that McDonald’s announced a collaboration with Alphabet’s Google Cloud, leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance restaurant operations globally.
