Google has announced a major transformation of Google Search, transitioning the platform to artificial intelligence powered by its new Gemini Flash 3.5 model. The updates, unveiled at the annual Google I/O 2026 conference, mark the end of the traditional search engine results page composed of ten blue links. Developed alongside Google DeepMind, the new interface transitions the search engine from a directory of web pages into an autonomous ecosystem, according to technology publication TechCrunch.

The updated Google search bar now automatically adapts to long, conversational queries rather than matching individual keywords, marking the most significant change to the interface in 25 years. Integrated AI suggestions help users formulate complex tasks in real time, removing the need to manually switch search modes.

AI integration also updates standard AI Overviews and the conversational AI Mode. Search results are now an interactive interface featuring dynamic widgets and visualizations that respond to follow-up questions in real time. For example, a query about black hole physics generates a 3D model that users can manipulate using text commands.

Google’s new information agents will launch in summer 2026, offering continuous, autonomous web analysis. The feature is an evolution of the Google Alerts service first introduced in 2003. Unlike the legacy system, which sent keyword-based notifications, the new AI agents can analyze and summarize information independently.

  • Operation: Runs 24/7 without user intervention.
  • Functionality: Tracks market trends based on specified parameters and monitors niche sectors.
  • Output: Generates regular analytical updates with links to primary sources.

The new Antigravity agent platform allows users to build personalized mini-applications within Google search using natural language text commands. The update shifts Google’s focus from passive information gathering to direct, action-oriented execution. Users can describe the logic of their desired software in plain text to generate tools, such as fitness apps tailored to specific physical metrics or interactive meal plans based on a personal calendar.

The interactive search bar rolls out to a broad audience this week, and the basic generative interface remains free. However, advanced features, including the 24/7 information agents and coding on the Antigravity platform, will initially be restricted to paid Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

The scale of Google’s AI tools shows its lead in the technology sector:

  • AI Overviews Users: Over 2.5 billion monthly users.
  • Conversational AI Mode Users: Over 1 billion monthly users.
  • ChatGPT Users (for comparison): Approximately 900 million weekly active users as of early 2026.

The updated algorithms impact the revenue models of traditional content sites and media outlets. Due to the deployment of AI Overviews, media organizations worldwide report a sharp drop in referral traffic from Google. Because Gemini Flash 3.5 provides structured answers directly on the main page, users are less likely to click through to external websites, reducing traditional web traffic.
