The upcoming NATO summit Turkey will serve as the primary platform for discussing the concept of “smart investments,” according to Bloomberg. Modern military conflicts have demonstrated that a massive budget alone is no longer enough to secure victory; instead, technological superiority has become the decisive factor. On the sidelines of the meeting scheduled for July 7–8 in Ankara, a major forum will bring together leading defense contractors. The central theme focuses on shifting away from the acquisition of costly conventional weaponry and heavy armor in favor of precision investments in cutting-edge developments, such as swarms of combat drones and AI-driven command systems.
Turkish Monopoly in the UAV Market
Selecting the Turkish capital as the center for drone technology is a logical move. Turkey has emerged as a leading global power by putting the development and production of military drones on an industrial footing. The country has revolutionized battlefield tactics, pioneering the use of UAVs for missions previously considered impossible for this type of aircraft. The widespread and successful deployment of Turkish systems in active combat zones—including Syria, Libya, Nagorno-Karabakh, and Ukraine—has confirmed their effectiveness and triggered an explosion in global demand. Today, Ankara controls an impressive 65% share of the global drone market.
NATO Summit Turkey and the Defense Giant
The scale of the host nation’s defense industry is remarkable. According to the Anadolu Agency, Turkey holds the record within the Alliance for the number of defense companies, with over 3,500 enterprises—surpassing the combined total of approximately 2,800 companies across the other 29 European allies. Turkey currently ranks seventh in NATO budget contributions with a €300 million payment and has a clear plan to double this amount by 2030. Furthermore, between 2020 and 2024, the Turkish military-industrial complex solidified its position as the 11th largest global arms exporter, turning defense trade into a powerful instrument of political influence.
