Football legend and former England captain David Beckham has been officially knighted for his contributions to football and British society. The prestigious ceremony, marking a pinnacle in his public career, was personally conducted by King Charles at Windsor Castle.
Beckham’s name was included on the King’s Birthday Honours list. The 50-year-old’s knighthood wasn’t the only detail to catch media attention; Beckham attended the ceremony wearing a suit tailored to designs developed by his wife, Victoria Beckham. Victoria herself received an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2017 for her services to the fashion industry. According to the footballer, “[King Charles] was very impressed with my suit.”
Beckham expressed immense pride in his knighthood, emphasizing his deep connection to the country and the monarchy. “I’ve always said how important the monarchy is to my family,” Beckham stated. “I’ve been fortunate enough to travel the world, and everyone wants to talk to me about our monarchy. And I’m proud of that,” the BBC reports.
David Beckham’s Knighthood and Public Legacy
David Beckham stands as one of the most prominent football stars of his generation. He represented England in three World Cups and two European Championships, making 115 appearances for the national team and scoring 17 goals. He served as team captain from 2000 to 2006.
After 11 years with Manchester United (until 2003), Beckham went on to play for Real Madrid (joining for £25 million), LA Galaxy, and had two loan spells at AC Milan, before concluding his illustrious career at Paris Saint-Germain in 2013.
His knighthood also acknowledges his significant role in securing London’s bid to host the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, alongside over two decades of collaboration with UNICEF (the UN Children’s Fund) and his participation in campaigns to eradicate malaria.
Ceremony Highlights

The knighting ceremony traditionally celebrates outstanding contributions to British culture and arts. On the same day as Beckham, other notable figures also received honours:
☛ Nobel laureate and author Kazuo Ishiguro (known for his novel “The Remains of the Day”) was awarded a Companion of Honour for literature.
☛ Renowned singer and musical theatre actress Elaine Paige received the title of Dame — the female equivalent of a knighthood.
