UK MPs Propose “Netflix Tax” to Fund British Content — NewsRoomIn

A cross-party group of UK lawmakers is pushing for a new levy on streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Disney+ to safeguard homegrown television.

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee has recommended that major platforms contribute 5% of their UK subscriber revenues into a dedicated cultural fund. The money would support productions with “distinctively British” appeal—shows that reflect the nation’s identity, fuel public discourse, and nurture local talent.

The committee warns that British storytelling is “under threat” as global streamers dominate viewership without sufficiently investing in UK-centric content. While hits like Netflix’s “Adolescence” prove the demand for British narratives, MPs argue these are exceptions rather than the rule.

➤ A voluntary industry fund within 12 months – or a mandatory tax imposed by the government.

➤ Clear criteria to ensure funding reaches shows with cultural value, not just commercial potential.

➤ Transparency from streamers about their UK production spending.

➤ Streamers Must “Pay Their Fair Share” – The report bluntly states: “It’s time for streamers to put their money where their mouth is.” Critics argue platforms profit from British audiences while funneling profits overseas.

Streaming services may resist, citing existing UK investments (e.g., Netflix’s The Crown, Disney+’s Doctor Who deals). However, MPs insist contributions should be proportionate to their booming UK revenues.

The government faces pressure to act—potentially sparking a showdown with Silicon Valley. If implemented, the levy could reshape the UK’s media landscape, ensuring British stories aren’t drowned out by global algorithms.
