The U.S. administration is launching a pilot program under which some tourists and business travelers (with B-1/B-2 visas) will be required to post a bond ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 to enter the country.

Duration: The program will run from August 20, 2025, to August 5, 2026.

Participants: The bond will be required from visitors from countries with historically high visa overstay rates. The list of countries will be announced later. It is estimated that the program will affect approximately 2,000 people.

Bond Amount: Determined individually by the consular officer and depends on the traveler’s personal circumstances.

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of visa bonds as a tool to reduce the number of undocumented migrants remaining in the U.S. after their visas expire. It is also viewed as a diplomatic tool designed to encourage foreign governments to improve their screening procedures.

This measure is part of a series of steps to tighten U.S. immigration policy.
