Village Roadshow sued for breach of contract, claiming the dual release hurt box office performance. The arbitration has cost over $18 million in legal fees and damaged their long-standing partnership, which included co-producing 89 titles, such as the Matrix franchise.<br>The company, founded in 1997 and behind films like Mad Max: Fury Road and Ready Player One, faced challenges from the pandemic, the writers\u2019 strike, and failed independent projects. In 2017, it sold a controlling stake to Falcon Strategic Partners and Vine Media Opportunities. By 2018, it began developing its own projects, but none of the six films or seven TV shows turned a profit. WB filed for arbitration in 2022, claiming Village Roadshow failed to pay over $100 million for The Matrix Resurrections. Village Roadshow countered that the payment was unjust due to the film\u2019s underperformance.<br>The dispute, now in arbitration, also involves Village Roadshow\u2019s exclusion from co-financing up to 15 projects.
