US tech company Firebird has officially commissioned a major data center and artificial intelligence (AI<\/a>) factory in the Armenian city of Hrazdan. Construction took just six months. The project required direct negotiations between the governments of Armenia and the United States, as the delivery of this tier of hardware requires special export authorization from US regulators. The facility is currently the largest technology hub in the region. Once all phases of construction are complete, the Hrazdan site will rank among the five most powerful computing clusters in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan<\/strong>, Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister Zhaslan Madiyev<\/strong>, and US diplomat David Allen<\/strong> attended the opening ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

World-Class Hardware and Initial Clients<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The facility’s current capacity is 15 megawatts. Its computational core runs on 6,144 liquid-cooled NVIDIA B200 GPUs. Several corporate partners contributed to the infrastructure: Dell supplied the server systems, Schneider Electric provided substations and uninterruptible power supplies, and Vertiv delivered specialized cooling solutions. International AI search engine Perplexity became one of the site’s first commercial clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of 2027, plans call for expanding the Hrazdan complex’s capacity to 300 megawatts, with the fleet of NVIDIA Blackwell and Rubin series chips exceeding 70,000 units. Firebird’s long-term roadmap includes establishing a regional network of computing centers with a combined capacity of up to 2 gigawatts, including facilities in Kazakhstan. The hub’s computing resources will be used for neural network training and research in biotechnology, robotics, and space exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regional Energy Challenges<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The large-scale AI factory has raised concerns regarding the stability of Armenia’s national power grid. The planned 300 megawatts represent roughly a quarter of the country’s peak winter electricity consumption. The targeted 2-gigawatt capacity exceeds the current generating output of all Armenian power plants combined, requiring the construction of new energy facilities or large-scale electricity imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armenia plans to address this energy challenge with assistance from the United States. NEWSROOM IN<\/strong><\/a> notes that in February of this year, both nations concluded negotiations on a “123 Agreement”<\/strong><\/a>, which represents the highest level of US nuclear cooperation. Under the pact, the US will supply small modular reactors (SMRs) to Armenia. Unlike traditional large-scale nuclear power plants, these compact SMR units are manufactured in factories and delivered to the installation site fully assembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A single modular reactor can power an entire city or a major industrial cluster while consuming minimal fuel. The units can be installed in remote areas and integrated directly into existing grids. They also feature passive cooling systems capable of shutting down automatically without human intervention or electricity. Total investment in the nuclear project is set at $9 billion<\/strong>, comprising $5 billion initially and an additional $4 billion in subsequent phases.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
