Lithuanian emergency services destroyed the UAV on-site. Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the National Crisis Management Center (NKVC), confirmed the origin of the aircraft: “It appears to be a Ukrainian drone. There are several modifications currently under discussion,” he said.

Official Vilnius is not blaming Kyiv for the incident. The Prosecutor General’s Office has opened an investigation, framing the case within the context of Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

Gaps in the Sky: Why Radars Missed Ukrainian drones

Lithuanian military radars failed to detect the UAV in the country’s airspace. The NKVC is currently collecting debris to determine how the aircraft crossed the border unnoticed. This failure in air defense has caused significant concern among both residents and government officials.

This is not the first such incident. A similar event occurred on March 23, 2026, in the Varėna district. In that instance, a Ukrainian drone targeting the port of Primorsk in Russia’s Leningrad region was diverted by Russian electronic warfare (EW) systems. The drone lost its orientation and crashed onto the ice of Lake Lavysas while flying below 300 meters. Radars also failed to detect it at that time.

Drone Incursions Among Neighbors

Ukrainian drones entering the airspace of the Baltic States and Finland has become a systemic issue. In Latvia, air defenses were put on alert over the same weekend due to an unidentified drone near the Russian border. NATO scrambled fighter jets to patrol the area. In Finland, military personnel tracked a UAV in South Karelia on the night of May 17 following tips from local residents.

The underlying cause remains consistent: Ukraine is actively striking targets in the Russian rear, while Russian electronic warfare units knock these drones off course, causing them to fall in neighboring countries.

Moving Toward a Unified Defense System

Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas admitted that the republic’s current air defense is “fragmented.” The military is taking urgent steps to address the situation. The Air Force has been ordered to integrate all recently purchased short-range radars into a single network. Additionally, Lithuania plans to test software that connects radars with interceptors and establish a unified anti-drone system in collaboration with Ukrainian experts who are expected to arrive in Lithuania soon.

NEWSROOM IN notes that Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda recently issued several firm statements regarding the sovereignty of the republic’s airspace. The Lithuanian leader emphasized that the country’s territory “has not been and will not be used” by any third countries for military operations against neighboring states. Lithuania has officially informed both the warring nations and its NATO allies of this position.

A local resident in the village of Samanė, Utena district, discovered a crashed craft later identified as one of the Ukrainian drones carrying an explosive charge.
