The epidemic is driven by the rare and poorly understood Bundibugyo strain. While the situation is classified as a dangerous regional epidemic, it does not yet meet the criteria for a global pandemic. As of May 16, 2026, the DRC’s Ituri province has recorded 8 confirmed cases, 246 suspected cases, and 80 deaths.

Ebola Outbreak Risks: The Bundibugyo Strain

The primary challenge of this strain is that there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments available. Historically, Ebola mortality rates range from 25% to 90%, with an average of approximately 50%.

The disease often mimics the common cold or malaria, beginning with a sudden fever, muscle aches, and headaches. Symptoms later progress to vomiting, diarrhea, a rash, and kidney or liver failure. In the most severe cases, patients experience internal and external bleeding. Because there is no specific cure, doctors rely on supportive therapy—such as intravenous fluids, oxygen, and fever-reducing medications—which significantly increases survival rates.

Transmission and Why Borders Will Remain Open

The WHO has urged the public not to panic, noting that Ebola is not airborne like COVID-19. Infection only occurs through direct contact with the bodily fluids—such as blood, sweat, or saliva—of an individual already showing symptoms. The virus is frequently transmitted during funerals through contact with the bodies of the deceased.

Despite the emergency status, the WHO opposes closing borders or halting trade with the DRC and Uganda. Officials argue that strict bans would drive movement underground, leading to illegal migration and making contact tracing impossible. Health authorities in Europe state there is currently no threat of an epidemic there, citing triple-screening protocols at airports as an effective barrier.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
