The study, which examined data from 34 European countries, found that 37.4% of teenagers aged 15-16 reported consuming large amounts of alcohol at least once in the past 30 days, a rate that is twice as high as that of adults (18.7%).

Denmark emerged as the country with the highest rate of teenage binge drinking, with a staggering 59% of Danish adolescents admitting to engaging in this harmful behavior. Germany followed closely behind at 55%, while Austria (49%), Slovakia (47%), and Croatia (45%) rounded out the top five. At the other end of the spectrum, the four Nordic countries – Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland – along with Portugal, exhibited the lowest rates of teenage binge drinking, with figures ranging from 8% to 22%.

Gender Gap and Trends

The study also shed light on the gender dynamics of teenage binge drinking. While men were consistently more likely to engage in this behavior across most countries, the difference between male and female teenage drinkers was surprisingly small. In the EU, 38.1% of boys and 36.8% of girls reported binge drinking at least once in the past 30 days.

Moreover, there has been a noticeable decline in teenage binge drinking rates across Europe over the past two decades. Between 1998 and 2018, the average rate of binge drinking among 15-year-old boys fell from 41% to 24%, and from 29% to 20% among girls.

NEWSROOM IN NOTES: Experts attribute the decline in teenage binge drinking to a combination of factors:

Stricter alcohol policies: Many European governments have implemented stricter regulations on alcohol sales and consumption, making it more difficult for teenagers to access alcohol.

Public awareness campaigns: Ongoing public awareness campaigns have been effective in educating young people about the dangers of binge drinking and promoting responsible alcohol consumption.

Increased parental supervision: Parents are playing a more active role in monitoring their children’s alcohol consumption and providing guidance on healthy lifestyle choices.

SHORT-BITE Key Statistics: A recent study by the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) has revealed some alarming statistics regarding teenage alcohol abuse in Europe.
