Hungarian oil and gas giant MOL<\/strong> has announced its capability to replace up to 80% of Russian oil supplies<\/strong> with alternative fuels. This declaration, deemed a \u201cturning point<\/em>\u201c by Bloomberg<\/a>, came just hours before a critical meeting between Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban<\/strong> and US President Donald Trump<\/strong> on November 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MOL’s Shift from Russian Oil in Hungary<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Hungary, along with Slovakia, had been one of the last remaining buyers of Russian oil within the European Union. Previously, both Hungarian authorities and MOL itself had adamantly stated that no alternatives to Russian energy resources existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, MOL’s latest quarterly report, issued by the company that operates refineries in Hungary and Slovakia, paints a different picture. It states that the Croatian Adria pipeline (Adriatic Pipeline) \u201cwill be able to supply up to 80% of alternative oil sources to our landlocked refineries, should Russian oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline cease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the company clarified that such diversification \u201cwill entail higher technical risks and logistical costs,\u201d the mere acknowledgment of this possibility marks a significant shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

White House Meeting<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

MOL’s statement comes amidst direct pressure from Washington, which intensified after the US imposed sanctions on Russian oil in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prime Minister Orban<\/strong> is set to arrive at the White House today for talks with President Trump. Orban is expected to seek Hungary’s exemption from secondary US sanctions<\/strong>, which could impact cooperation with Russia’s energy sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement by MOL, the country’s sole oil refiner, therefore appears to be a preemptive political gesture designed to demonstrate Hungary’s readiness to the American side for diversification and a reduction in energy dependence on Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bloomberg interprets this declaration as direct evidence that US administrative and sanctions pressure has compelled Budapest, long a vocal advocate for Moscow within the EU, to reevaluate its energy priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
