Pope Leo XIV issued a sharp rebuke to global political leaders during an apostolic visit to Cameroon, condemning nations that divert massive financial resources toward war while ignoring investment in human development and humanitarian needs.
Pope Leo XIV and the Business of War
The pontiff stated that a “handful of tyrants” currently controls global processes, pursuing actions that are effectively devastating the planet. He specifically criticized leaders who use religion as an ideological tool to justify aggression and called on the international community to immediately change its political course.
“The masters of war pretend not to know that it takes only a moment to destroy, but often a lifetime is not enough to rebuild. They close their eyes to the billions spent on killing and destruction, while the resources needed for healthcare, education, and reconstruction are nowhere to be found,” the head of the Catholic Church emphasized.
Indirect Conflict with Donald Trump
The Pope’s remarks created significant political resonance following recent statements from Washington. This week, U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly criticized the Vatican’s position regarding the war with Iran, as well as the pontiff’s comments on casualty figures and protests within the Islamic Republic.
Pope Leo XIV refrained from a direct political confrontation with the U.S. president. He noted that he does not intend to engage in public disputes but will not alter his peacemaking stance. The pontiff concluded that a peaceful resolution remains the absolute priority because “too many people are suffering in the world today.”
